10th Grade
Students will demonstrate previous grade-level skills.
1. The student writes clearly and effectively.
- 1.1 Maintains a sharp focus throughout the work; focuses text clearly to hold a readerŐs attention, to tell a story, and/or describe a phenomenon.
- 1.2 Approaches a topic in an individualized and purposeful way.
- 1.3 Discriminates between essential, intriguing, or useful information and trivia.
- 1.4 Develops a topic or theme or central metaphor with carefully chosen and focused detail and content.
- 1.5 Controls emphasis, sequencing, focus and transitions in a variety of genres.
- 1.6 Writes coherent paragraphs.
- 1.7 Develops analysis, synthesis, persuasion, and exposition logically; demonstrates advanced logic.
- 1.8 Strengthens and modifies voice as appropriate.
- 1.9 Uses figurative language and sound patterns effectively.
- 1.10 Considers the connotation and denotation when choosing words.
- 1.11 Varies the complexity of sentence structure and cadence for effect.
- 1.12 Uses a variety of resources to ensure accuracy of punctuation, capitalization, and conventional grammar usage.
- 1.13 Uses precise, interesting, and natural word choice.
- 1.14 Uses specialized vocabulary relevant to a specific content area.
- 1.15 Uses standard writing conventions to enhance meaning and clarity.
- 1.16 Uses paragraphing and stanza division to reinforce text's organizational structure.

2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.
- 2.1 Identifies, analyzes, describes, and meets the needs of a chosen audience.
- 2.2 Shows a sense of how a particular audience may interpret a text.
- 2.3 Writes for a broad range of purposes including: to reflect upon experience, to experiment with language, to make inferences or draw conclusions.
- 2.4 Writes in a variety of forms and genres (tall tales, myths, fables, reports, experiments, directions, dramas, narratives, journals, poems, essays, stories, etc.).
- 2.5 Interweaves elements of exposition, argumentation, narration, and figurative and rhythmic language as needed according to audience and purpose.
- 2.6 Identifies particular writing skills required for occupational/career areas of interest.
- 2.7 Produces technical and non-technical documents for career audiences such as a research report, resume, etc.
- 2.8 Understands the importance of using a consistent reference style when writing reports or technical documents.
3. The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.
Prewrites
- 3.1 Generates ideas and plans writing independently.
- 3.2 Uses available tools and technologies consistently through the writing process.
- 3.3
Analyzes and synthesizes information from a variety of sources, such
as interviews, multimedia, books, and periodicals.
Drafts
- 3.4 Formulates and constructs ideas, coordinating a number of ideas and points of view.
- 3.5 Presents argumentation
clearly, coherently, and precisely, employing a logical flow of ideas
and relationships.
Revises
- 3.6 Confers with others to improve text; uses language to enrich and enhance style; investigates other sources of information to improve text.
- 3.7 Uses reference technologies to improve writing.
- 3.8 Demonstrates
self-correction; changes text to improve argument, flow, and logic.
Edits
