International Baccalaureate
1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 1.1 Demonstrate a working knowledge of art elements and principles: line, value, shape, form, space, texture, color, size, variety, movement, rhythm, emphasis, gradation, contrast, balance.
- 1.2 Identify artistic techniques and historical styles.
- 1.3 Identify and choose media for use and function to include pencil, pen/ink, brush ink, color pencil, charcoal, conte, pastel (oil and chalk), printmaking, acrylic, watercolor, tempura, mixed media.
- 1.4 Identify and applies a variety of drawing and painting techniques: contour, gesture, value, hatch, stippling, pointillism, watercolor, acrylic, and tempura.
2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.
The A.P. Studio Art has specific portfolio requirements that must be met to receive college credit. They are:
- 2.1 Meet the International
Baccalaureate portfolio requirements to receive an IB certificate in
Art and Design. They are:
- eight drawings and/or paintings
- four studies in color and color theory
- four designs relating to design and advertising
- four 3-dimensional pieces, and
- 20 pieces that are student driven. Also
- a minimum of 3 notebooks that show research, comprehension, application, and evaluation through written word, sketches, and outside resources.
3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 3.1 For Imaginative and Creative Thinking and Expression (IMAG), the work must reveal a consistently imaginative approach, a creative response and an unusual ability to develop ideas with intelligence and originality. 35% of total score/grade.
- 3.2 For Persistence in Research (PERS), the student will show a considerable body of work that reflects an independent and original pursuit of a wide variety of ideas in different media. The research is personal and adventurous and projects are seen right through to a successful conclusion. 20% of total score/grade.
- 3.3 For Technical Skill (TECH), the student will show evidence of considerable skill having been acquired enabling the student to develop and express ideas effectively, resulting in work of consistently high technical quality. 15% of total score/grade.
- 3.4 For Understanding the Characteristics and Functions of the Chosen Media (MED), the student will show that the media was handled with great confidence and is appropriate to form and function. 10% of total score/grade.
- 3.5 For Understanding of the Fundamentals of Design (DES), the student will give evidence that the elements and principles of design are an integral and consistent part of the candidate's work. The fundamental principles of design may be applied in different ways according to various cultural traditions.
- 3.6 For Evaluation of Own Growth and Development (GROW), the candidate has a clear understanding of the reasons for his or her development and is able to justify the selection of own work. He/she is able to identify own works of varying quality and to discuss their relationship with this development.
4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.
To meet this standard, the student will:
- 4.1 Evaluate personal work verbally and in writing.
- 4.2 Recognize the function of art in the surrounding environment by listening to local artists and speakers related to art careers and schools.
- 4.3 Observe utilitarian objects and art in public places.
- 4.4 Understand elements of art and their relationship to nature
- 4.5 Recognize the function of art in the community by exposure to local painters, architects, murals, etc. and evaluates them as they relate to art elements.
