High School Drawing & Painting

Levels II, III, IV, V, & VI
1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts. To meet this standard, the student will:
- 1.1 Demonstrates a working knowledge of art elements and principles: line, value, shape, form, space, texture, color, size, variety, movement, rhythm, emphasis, contrast, balance, and gradation.
- 1.2 Recognizes historical styles and artistic techniques.
- 1.3 Identifies and chooses media for use and function: pencil, pen/ink, charcoal, pastels (oil/chalk), tempera, brush ink, colored pencil, conte, printmaking, acrylics, and watercolor
- 1.4 Identifies and applies a variety of drawing and painting techniques and materials for example: contour, gesture, value, cross-hatch, stippling, pointillism, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, collage, and mixed media
2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems. To meet this standard, the student will:
- 2.1 Demonstrates knowledge of one- and two-point perspective to still life, life drawing, landscape, and direct observation drawing
- 2.2 Shows a workable knowledge of compositional elements in traditional and abstract compositions
- 2.3 Develops an art vocabulary related to tools, media, materials, techniques, terminology, and technology
- 2.4 Demonstrates skill in a variety of art process: drawing, painting, framing, print making, and matting
3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings. To meet this standard, the student will:
- 3.1 Demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge of tools and media to solve a variety of art problems
- 3.2 Recognizes and uses line, value, and color to enhance mood and feeling in rendering
- 3.3 Communicates feelings, issues, and ideas through use of combined media and artistic style
- 3.4 Develops a personal drawing approach to figure and facial life drawing
4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work. To meet this standard, the student will:
- 4.1 Identifies the elements of art and their relationship to nature
- 4.2 Observes, writes, and discusses merits of personal work and the work of others
- 4.3 Identifies work of different historical periods, artists, and artistic techniques
- 4.4 Listens to speakers in art related careers and school opportunities
- 4.5 Observes art in public places, personal life, and utilitarian objects
