Level 1

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 1.1 Demonstrate a working knowledge of art elements and principles: line, value, shape, form, space, texture, color, tone, size, and gradation.
  • 1.2 Recognize historical styles and artistic techniques.
  • 1.3 Identify and experiments with different media to include, but not limited to: pencil, pen/ink, charcoal, pastels (oil/chalk), tempera and watercolor.

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 2.1 Demonstrate knowledge of one- and two-point perspective, and point of view.
  • 2.2 Show a workable knowledge of compositional elements.
  • 2.3 Develops an art vocabulary related to tools, materials, techniques, terminology.
  • 2.4 Demonstrate skill in a variety of art process: drawing, painting, framing, printmaking.
  • 2.5 Demonstrate a knowledge of figure and facial proportion to life drawing.
  • 2.6 Identify historical art styles and apply these processes to personal art.
  • 2.7 Demonstrate the ability to manipulate line to create movement and optical illusion.

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 3.1 Demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge of tools and media to solve a variety of art problems
  • 3.2 Develop the ability to recognize mood in line, value, and color
  • 3.3 Develop the ability to combine media to enhance ideas and communicate with the viewer

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work.

To meet this standard, the student will:

  • 4.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of art and their relationship to nature.
  • 4.2 Evaluates personal work verbally and in writing.
  • 4.3 Identify work of different historical periods and artistic techniques.
  • 4.4 Listen to speakers in art related careers and schools.
  • 4.5 Observe art in public places and utilitarian objects.
