High School Drama - Draft

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts. To meet this standard, the student:

  • 1. Demonstrates persistence and self-discipline in rehearsal while developing concentration, movement, emotion, characterization, action, and observation.
  • 2. Observes several people in various situations noting assumptions, walks, mannerisms, and speaking styles. Uses observations as a basis for creating multi-dimensional characters
  • 3. Creates characterization using multi-media components to develop a scene, situation, mood and plot that is suggested by the media.

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems. To meet this standard, the student:

  • 1. Arranges furniture on stage to achieve balance, design, and blocking for the actors that utilizes the components of direction and creates an interesting series of stage pictures.
  • 2. Incorporates environmental elements into a character's reaction in a given situation to show the effects of the elements on their actions.
  • 3. Uses improvisation to draw upon past experiences and observations to resolve a conflict situation.
  • 4. Designates areas of concern facing students in the school and create original monologues/sketches that deal with the issues.

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings. To meet this standard, the student:

  • 1. Demonstrates different genres in drama presentations that are geared for a specific audience.
  • 2. Applies given standards to a presentation. Rates the performance and justify the choices.
  • 3. Utilizes the components of evaluation to write a critique of a drama performance, the script, and the technical and audience response. Supports with specific examples from the presentation.

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life, and work. To meet this standard, the student:

  • 1. Builds a rehearsal schedule for a major production that includes timelines for all aspects of the play; acting, set construction, lighting, and sound, props, costumes, advertising and ticket sales.
  • 2. Researches an individual and a time period (i.e. customs, costumes, art, life styles, and dance) in which they lived. Creates an original script based on the research.
  • 3. Selects an early Greek or Roman classic work. Prepare and perform a monologue in the style. Compares and contrasts the performance with other styles such as Commedia del Arte or Shakespearean.
  • 4. Gains skills and insights into human relationships by working in group situations adjusting to the individuals involved.
  • 5. Facilitates the understanding and appreciation of period literature and its influence on today's society.
