Day 1 Group all of the letters of the alphabet into vowels and consonants. |
Day 2 Add these consonant blends to the word endings to make as many words as you can. Consonants: bl, dr, sl, tr, Endings: ack, oop, end, ick, ap, ip, ink, ap, ash, ain |
Day 3 Find at least three more words for each silent consonant: kn = knight wr = wrestle |
Day 4 Put the following words into 3 or 4 groups with at least 2 words in each group. Label each group. children, which, cheer, when, teach, white, with, nowhere, thank, she, push, teeth |

Day 5 Make a list of all things in your bedroom or living room that begin with, or end with ch, ph, sh, and th. (e.g., ch = chair) |
Day 6 Read the first chapter of your favorite chapter book. List all words that end with a silent e for each vowel (a, e, i, o, u). (example: plate, bite, bone, flute) |
Day 7 Go to a park, zoo, aquarium, or playground and list all words that begin with br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr. (e.g., gr = grass) |
Day 8 Give your child a sound to learn such as bl. Than have them cut out words from newspapers, or magazines that have that sound in them. |

Day 9 Look around the house or if you are in the car, look outside and name something. Have your child see if they can find a word that rhymes with the word you have chosen. (e.g., cat = bat fog = dog) Try doing this with opposites too. (e.g., under the table = over the table). |
Day 10 Cut out words from the newspaper, magazines, or make your own flashcards with words on them. Have your child arrange the words in alphabetical order and group them by the number of syllables. |
Day 11 Complete the following sentences with "er", "ir" or "ur" words. Meat is to a butcher as bread is to a___________. White is to snow as brown is to___. Bird is to feather as mammal is to ___________. |
Day 12 Play a word game in the car as you drive. Call out the name of something that you see as you pass by it. Have your child tell you what sound the word begins and ends with Ex. tree = tr store = st

Bonus Idea:
When you come to a word you don't know, what do you do? Try a few of these ideas. Read around the word, can you figure it out by the other words? Look at the picture, can that give you a clue? Try chunking the word together. How about blending the sounds together by stretching each sound out. Ask a family member what the word is. Good readers have lots of strategies to try when they come to words they don't know.
