Fifth Grade Learning Expectations

The learning expectations listed below are for fifth grade. Students will be assessed based on their progress toward meeting these grade-level expectations. Promotion will be based on the mastery of the reading expectations.

Writing Expectations

1. The student writes clearly and effectively.

Concept and Design

  • 1. Writes coherent paragraphs.
  • 2. Demonstrates elaboration of a topic or theme through examples, details, facts, etc.
  • 3. Uses transitional sentences and phrases to connect ideas.

Style

  • 4. Begins to choose precise language well suited to the topic and audience.
  • 5. Varies sentence lengths and structure.

Conventions

  • 6. Knows and applies correct spelling for age-level words.
  • 7. Applies conventional grammar.
  • 8. Applies capitalization and punctuation rules correctly ( . ! ? : ; ' " ).

2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.

  • 1. Writes in a variety of forms.
  • 2. Writes for a range of purposes (e.g. to entertain, to create, or debate).
  • 3. Cites sources when writing reports or technical documents.

3. The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.

  • 1. Uses a variety of pre-writing strategies.
  • 2. Writes using complete phrases, sentences, and thoughts.
  • 3. Confers with others to improve writing.
  • 4. Corrects some errors independently.
  • 5. Applies reference tools.
  • 6. Produces a legible final product.

4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

  • 1. Articulates qualities that make a piece of writing effective.
  • 2. Offers feedback on others' writings.
