Kindergarten Learning Expectations

Essential Learning 1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

Writing Skill 1.3: Writes own name.

Definition of Writing Skill:

The student can form letters in his/her first name and place them in correct order.

The name is recognizable.

Strategies:

  • Provide direct instruction to individuals as necessary. Instruction them on formation (many students come not knowing how to form the lower case letters in their names).
     
  • Provide tracing opportunities as needed.
     
  • Provide a model for them to copy -- a name tag written in D'Nealian style.
     
  • Recruit family help.
     
  • Provide many opportunities for students to sign name: sign in when they come to school, sign up for centers, or work groups,names on daily papers.

  • D'Nealian or Modern Primary font for the computer:

- print letters in large size (74 to 100) in out line form for children practice tracing and copying.
