Kindergarten Learning Expectations

Essential Learning 1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

Writing Skill 1.1: Prints letters accurately.

Definition of Writing Skill:

Letters can be easily read. Print is from top to bottom and left to right.

Strategies:

Letters -

  • Students initially learn to print letters when they are learning their sounds.
     
  • Use of district adopted D'Nealian for teaching letter formation. Special attention is paid to verbal descriptions of letter formation provided in the teacher's manual.
     
  • Use lap sized white boards and writing in the air for group lessons on letter formation and practice.
     
  • Use salt trays (e.g., salt, rice, or corn meal on dark colored tray).
     
  • Wipe off transparencies for tracing, or practice.
     
  • Writing in shaving cream.
     
  • Practice in journals.

  • Use lap sized white boards and writing in the air for group lessons on number formation and practice.
     
  • Use salt trays (e.g., salt, rice, or corn meal on dark colored tray).

  • D'Nealian or Modern Primary font for the computer:

- print letters in large size (74 to 100) in outline form for children to practice tracing and copying.

Teacher observation of child's writing.
