Reading Grading Guide for 3rd Grade

1. The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read.

1.3 Builds vocabulary through wide reading.

1.3.1 Uses pictures, graphics, word meaning and context clues to comprehend text.

1.3.2 Builds reading vocabulary across content areas.

1.3.3 Identifies and interprets general and specialized vocabulary critical to the meaning of text.

Reading text mid 2nd grade (2.4) or below.

With guidance, I have difficulty applying strategies to predict, clarify and expand word meaning, and using new vocabulary.

Reading text mid to end of 2nd grade (2.5-2.9).

With some guidance, I apply strategies to predict, clarify and expand word meaning, and use new vocabulary.

Reading text at grade level.

I apply strategies to predict, clarify, and expand word meaning, and use new vocabulary.

Reading text at or above grade level.

With 90% accuracy or better, I independently apply strategies to predict, clarify, and expand word meaning, and use new vocabulary.

Scoring Notes:

Below Expectations: 

ITBS or STAR is below 35%.  Student assessments are in text with reading levels of 2.4 or below and/or grade level test scores are 59% or below.

Approaches Expectations:

On norm referenced tests such as ITBS and STAR, general ranges for approaching expectations are between the 35-49th percentile. Student assessments are in text with reading levels between 2.5-2.9 and/or grade level test scores between 60-69%.
