Reading Grading Guide for 1st Grade

2. The student understands the meaning of what is read.

2.1  Demonstrates evidence of reading comprehension.

2.1.1 Demonstrates basic comprehension of the content of literary, informational, and task-oriented texts such as plays, newspaper articles, and instructions.

2.1.2 Demonstrates comprehension of the main idea and supporting details through summarizing in own words and using evidence from text.

2.1.3 Connects previous experiences and knowledge when reading to understand characters, events, and information.

2.1.4 Makes inferences and predictions based on the text.

Reading or listening to text at grade level.

I understand how to use monitoring strategies, prior knowledge, inferences, and predictions to understand the meaning of stories.

Reading or listening to text at/or above grade level.

With 90% accuracy or better, I independently understand how to use monitoring strategies, prior knowledge, inferences, and predictions to understand the meaning of stories.

DRA, teacher anecdotal records, reading conference record, basal assessments

Scoring Notes:

Below Expectations: DRA Level 10 or below in June

Approaching Expectations: DRA between Level 12-14 in June

A “variety of text” implies different genre such as poetry, non-fiction, biographies, etc.

In general, students coded as below expectations are working with below grade level text.  Their ability to apply these skills and strategies are minimal.
