First Grade Learning Expectations

The learning expectations listed below are for first grade. Students will be assessed based on their progress toward meeting these grade-level expectations.

Music Expectations

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the music.

  • 1.1 Performs the following musical skills: reads and writes simple melodies and rhythms using symbolic notation, sings pitches Sol-Mi-La, identifies repeated patterns and phrases, and same/different song structure.
  • 1.2 Builds musical and/or dance compositions in a creative process using the acquired musical skills.

2. The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems.

  • 2.1 Practices presentation and evaluation skills by participating in small and large-group creative activities.

3. The student uses music to communicate ideas and feelings.

  • 3.1 Responds creatively to feelings or concepts communicated in music using voices, instruments, or movement.

4. The student understands how music connects to other subject areas, life, and work.

  • 4.1 Sings songs about life, work, and other subject areas for fun and enjoyment.
